37 billion TL to be invested in Wastewater and Sewerage until 2023
Due to rapidly increasing world population, urbanization, industrialization and agricultural activities, world water resources are rapidly running short and clean water resources are getting polluted. Because of climate change, water resources can be fed less. For this reason, the treatment and reuse of wastewater is becoming increasingly important.

IWE Istanbul Water Expo Exhibition Director Tülin Bozkurt Bulut said: “Due to the growing importance of water and the need to use existing water resources properly, it has been decided by the United Nations to celebrate every 22nd of March as World Water Day. World Water Day 2017 aims to create public opinion on the issue of saving by reusing waste water and ensuring sustainable management without causing threat to human life and ecosystem.
Currently, 80% of the world's wastewater is contained in the ecosystem without treatment. Approximately 1.8 billion people are using contaminated drinking water resources and 663 million people are completely devoid of clean drinking water resources. For this reason, 842 thousand people lose their lives every year. Today, 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. It is expected that this number will increase to 70% by 2050. The population suffering from water shortage in the world will reach from 1.2 billion to 3 billion in 2025. Experts say that it is very important to increase water use efficiency in order to make up the 40% difference between clean water supply and demand.
While the world’s water resources remain unchanged, the amount of wastewater continues to increase and neither the infrastructure nor the management systems are sufficient to meet the increasing demand.
The problem we face is very serious. It is clear that future water demand cannot be met if a global revolution in wastewater management cannot be achieved.
We believe that Istanbul Water Expo, which will be organized in Turkey, the meeting point of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, will contribute to effective and sustainable water and wastewater management with participation of public institutions, private sector, civil society, universities and media organizations from all over the world.”
By 2023, 1501 new wastewater treatment plants will be constructed and 100% of the municipal population will benefit from wastewater services
The EU Integrated Environmental Adaptation Strategy (UÇES) covering the years 2007-2023 has been prepared between Turkey and the EU.
Within this scope, according to the Wastewater Treatment Plan prepared by Turkey’s Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, a total of 1501 wastewater treatment plants (1418 new WWTP and 83 WWTP to be renewed) will be constructed between 2015-2023.
During this period, a total of 37 billion TL is planned to be spent for wastewater treatment plant and sewerage investments.
IWE Istanbul Water Expo Exhibition Director Tülin Bozkurt Bulut said: “We believe that the Waste Water Treatment Action Plan prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization is a very important step taken in this area.
Completion of the planned 1501 wastewater treatment plant will be the most important project that has been carried out by our country to this date by providing the entire municipal population with waste water services until 2023.”
